Why Page Speed is an important ranking factor for Seo

One of the most important factors in SEO but often forgotten is website speed / load time. Now lets look at why this is so important and how you can improve your website speed and find some tools to see how your website rank.

First point is you should want a fast website even if it isn't a ranking factor. We live in a fast pace society today and if your website isn't loading fast then your losing business. Have you ever gone to a website and it takes too long to load and you hit the back button? I know I have and if your website takes more than 3 seconds to display your losing potential customers. Now several studies vary on how many customers you lose. One study says any website past 3 second load time loses 40% of the people that click on it. Another one says you start losing 10% per second your website takes to load past 2 seconds.

Google Announce several years ago that speed was now a SEO ranking factor and there is a good reason as you read above. They want people to continue using Google and slow webpages make people leave the site. This signals Google that your website is not relevant to your search. This is especially important on mobile devices.

What causes a website to be slow?


There are many things that can cause your website to be slow. Here are some most common ones but it can be many different things.


Webhosting- Your Webhosting company could be slow and costing you website traffic.


Wordpress Plugins- The more plugins you have on the more likely your site will slow down. Sometime there is one slowing down your site. Other times there is several slowing down your site.


Too ManyScripts Running- You might have too much script running including tracking scripts etc.


Images not optimize- If your images are not optimize this can cause a slow down on your website.

and the list goes on and on.

Tools to Help you test your website.


Page Speed insights is a good tool to test your website. Its a little picky on Mobile but I can say if you score above 30 or so on mobile your doing pretty good. If it below that mark then your website could be getting penalize for being too slow.


Gtmetrix is another good tool I like to use also.
